After wetting down with warm water, we use a detergent-free shampoo, which is specially formulated to use on the entire dog. How often should I get my dog bathed?

This is a frequent question that we receive, and the answer is always “it depends on…”. While dogs do not sweat like we do, they do produce skin oils that have an odor and attract dirt and dust. Some dogs are oilier than others (looking at your hounds) and need to be bathed more often. Some dogs like to jump in the river, pond, or stream; others avoid even walking on wet grass. Regardless of breed or habits, we recommend that all doggies get bathed at least once every 12 weeks.

Can I just bathe my dog at home with the same results?

Maybe, but only if you have a very short-haired dog, who is small enough to easily fit in the sink/tub, and you have the correct knowledge, equipment and abilities. Home sinks and bathtubs often leave the dog standing in water, this may cause issues with getting all the shampoo off as well as skin fungal growth. The ‘wet dog’ smell that is often present after home baths comes from moisture on the dog’s coat near the skin. When the moisture is allowed to dry slowly there is an increase in bacterial growth that produces the soured smell; if your dog has a heavier coat towel drying will not remove the moisture at the skin. We use a high-velocity dryer to blow off all the standing water as soon as they are rinsed to prevent that issue.

Nails should be trimmed on a period basis to avoid injury, ears should be cleaned to reduce the chances of infection, and paw pads may need to be shaved to avoid slipping. We perform all those services included with each bath; if you are bathing at home please consider learning to perform these important tasks as well.

Finally, consider the aftermath of a home bath: wet walls from shaking, wet floor, wet dog running around the house, and enough hair clogging the drain to give a challenge to your local plumber. Our place is made for this purpose, our team is trained for this task, your home bathtub is less so.

My dog needs or has a special shampoo, can you help?

While we love our house shampoo, some of our doggie friends need specialized shampoos to treat and prevent skin conditions. We will use any pet formulated or prescribed shampoo that is brought in by our human clients. We also offer several different specialty shampoos that are specifically designed to treat certain conditions including: hot spots, fungal infections, bacterial infections, malodors, oily skin, and allergies. The additional cost of those shampoos is nominal.

Keeping your dog’s nails trimmed is essential to their overall health and wellbeing. Dog nails continue to grow throughout their entire lives and need to be trimmed back periodically to prevent injury. As their nails grow longer a small hook fill form on the end of the nail, which while perfect for snagging their owner’s clothing (RIP holiday sweater), longer nails can cause injury to your doggie friend. Nails with hooks are more likely to be snagged on carpets, bedding, roots, and between floorboards; they can be traumatically pulled out when caught, which is quite painful for your pet. Dog nails will also begin to curl inward toward the paw pads, making even walking uncomfortable for them.

Unlike human fingernails, dog nails have a capillary vascular structure running through them, commonly referred to as a “quick”. The quick can be seen by looking at the underside of your dogs’ nails, looking for the small dark line. It will recede more toward the nailbed each time the nails are trimmed, resulting in the ability to trim shorter.

We offer nail trimming by either grinding them smooth or clipping. Our nail trimming service is provided on a walk-in basis daily from 10:00AM until 4:00 PM on any day we are open (Tuesday through Saturday). We can have the service completed in 5-10 minutes, depending on the cooperation level.

At Ridge Dog Shop, we do not require any reservation for nail trimming, nor does any other service have to be made. We have experienced staff who can get the dog’s nails as short as safely possible without causing injury to the nail’s quick. What if my dog does not like having their nails done?

Then they are in a far from exclusive club. Dog paws are sensitive, and not all dogs have had pleasant experiences in the past with getting nails trimmed. We use professional tools and trained staff to perform all nail trimmings. We will assign additional staff as needed to keep the dog calmly in place while the service is complete; sometimes everyone just needs a good hug to get through the scary experiences. We do use the basket-style muzzles as needed to protect the groomers and the dogs as they will sometimes bite at what is scaring them – including a running nail grinder.

What is the difference between nail clipping and nail grinding?

Nail clipping is using specially designed tools to clip the end of the nail off, similar to humans using a fingernail clipper.
Nail grinding , which is more popular, uses a sandpaper grinder to file the nails. With the grinder we can get the nails shorter and smoother, and there are less chances of the nails splitting. We use this method for most of our nail trims; however, a very small percentage of our doggie clients do not tolerate it well.

Can I trim my dog’s nails at home?

Without the tools, training and experience we do not recommend trying to trim your friend’s nails at home. If nails are clipped too short you may hit the nail quick and cause and injury that will create a unhappy memory for both you and your pet.

How to prevent matting in dogs?

Matting begins when animal hairs intertwine with one another and then continue to grow, usually just above the skin level. Regular brushing helps to prevent matting, especially in problem areas such as the ears, tail and legs. When matted areas get wet from swimming, rain, bathing, or dewy grass, they become tighter. If you have a dog that needs regular brushing, make it part of your overall care plan.

How often should I brush my dog?

The brushing needs of each dog are dependent on several factors, including breed, age, coat type, hairstyle, and activity level. Of these the biggest factor is breed. For example, a typical Golden Retriever would be fine with a weekly brush out and any mating encountered would not be too difficult to break up. On the other end of the spectrum are poodles and poodle mixes that require brushing on a more frequent basis. If you dog’s breed ends with “oodle” or “poo” their coat will mat so fast you can almost watch it happen. Generally, the longer and thicker the coat, the more often they need to be brushed; while poodles and poodle mixes do not shed, they have a thick – dense coat that needs to be cared for regularly.

Short-haired breeds need to be brushed as well. Shorter hair doggies like terriers, hounds, and labs should still be brushed every couple of weeks with a soft bristle brush to remove dead hair and stimulate the skin. There are rubber tipped brushes that do an outstanding job without any skin irritation.

What type of brush or other tools do I need?

The brush type needed depends on the coat type. For poodle mixes, purchase a “Slicker” brush with firm bristles that are long enough to reach to your friend’s skin level. If you keep their hair longer, then you will need a brush with longer bristles, and shorter bristles for shorter haircuts. You will also need a metal comb to locate any mats that are present.

If you have a “down-coated” dog, which is one in which the hair grows downward toward the ground, then you also need an undercoat rake. Dogs like Golden Retrievers, Huskey, Great Pyrenees, Shepherds, and their mixes develop an undercoat that will not shed on its own. Using an undercoat rake will help to pull the dead hair out; pick the rake type that has teeth long enough to reach your dog’s skin level.

When should I start brushing my dog?

The day after they come to your home, establish it as part of your friend’s routine. If your dog is being welcomed to your home as a puppy, their fur will be light and wispy – free of any tangles, please brush them anyway. Brushing puppies creates a bond, their mothers were their first groomers and will help them to get used to the experience.

My dog will not let me brush them; how do I handle that?

I am around dogs who are being brushed throughout the day at our shop, when I get home and pull out the brush my Golden Retriever mix runs and hides in the closet. I feel your pain. One of the tricks I use is to put him on an elevated surface, like a table, using a yoga mat to avoid him slipping and sliding. He feels much less like he can just bolt for the safety of the closet and allows me to brush him out.

They have trained, experienced staff that will come to your home to walk and care for your friend while you are away. Their team will take your doggie friend for a walk and then brush them out before letting them settle back into the home they are used to instead of a loud kennel. If you do board your dog at a kennel that does not brush them, please do not have them perform a bath at the end of the stay. Any matting that has developed during the stay will become very tight after going through the bath before being brushed out first.

What are my grooming options if my dog is matted?

Many grooming shops will only provide the option to shave the entire coat off and start over, we do not. In most cases we can break up the matting using specialized tools, equipment and trained personnel. We do charge an additional fee for de-matting though as the process is time consuming to perform safely. While we make every effort to ensure the dogs are as comfortable as possible, removing mats does sometimes pull on the fur, so prevention is always the better option. If your dog is severely matted or if the matting is very close to the skin, preventing our team from breaking them up safely, then we will recommend the option of going with a shorter haircut that will still leave them cute. We are always happy to assess any matting and provide honest recommendations on the best options available.
